Department Overview
Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest disciplines of engineering, although it gained separate identity in the nineteenth century. The scope of Mechanical Engineering is quite wide. It finds applications in many fields. Mechanical Engineering offers a wide range of specializations to choose from, with diverse opportunities to contribute to the next stage in the development of modern technology. It is in line with this that the university set up the Mechanical Engineering Department in the 2020/2021 academic year to help address the needs of the region and the country as a whole.
The Department focuses on Competency-Based Training (CBT) and innovation. This falls in line with the aim of the Department to train students who require little or no supervision to work in the industry, after completion of their programme. With regard to this, the Department is equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory and workshop equipment with competent staff that have experience in the industry, for teaching and learning.
The Programmes will produce graduates with the requisite knowledge and practical skills that can effectively and efficiently perform a variety of tasks starting from design to management of machines and equipment and additionally perform supportive roles in other engineering disciplines. In addition to employment in industry, graduates of Automobile and Mechanical Engineering also work in government, management, consulting, and academic organizations.

Brief Biography:
Ing. Augustine K. Milku is with so many years of industrial experience and a researcher as well who is enthusiastic in carrying out applied research. His main objective is to contribute to engineering and scientific knowledge of which, the outcome of his research findings should have a direct impact on the socio-economic development of the Upper East Region and the nation as a whole. Ing. Milku has twenty-five (25) years of experience in the Mechanical Engineering industry (Aircraft and Automobile Maintenance Engineering) in addition to teaching and research experience. Ing. Milku has published extensively in internationally recognized journals and is actively involved in developing competence-based training materials for the Commission for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (CTVET). He is a registered member and Professional Engineer of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (PE GhIE) who strives to promote and adhere to engineering standards and codes with due regard to workplace Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental awareness.

Ing. Augustine K. Milku is an accomplished Mechanical Engineer, researcher, and academic with extensive industrial experience in automotive and aircraft maintenance engineering. He holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering Management from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), an MSc. in Engineering and Management from Coventry University, United Kingdom, and a BTech. in Automobile Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) / Ho Technical University. He also holds a Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Automotive Option) from Cape Coast Technical University.
With over twenty-five years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, including aircraft and automobile maintenance engineering, Ing. Milku combines industrial practice with applied research focused on sustainable engineering solutions. His expertise includes automotive engineering, vehicular exhaust emission analysis, aircraft maintenance engineering, and gas turbine engines. He has published extensively in internationally recognized journals, serves as a contributor to competence-based training material development for the Commission for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), and actively promotes engineering standards, occupational health and safety, and environmental awareness. Engr. Norbert Johnson Amoanab is a Mechanical Engineer and academic currently pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa. He holds an MSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he specialized in Design and Manufacturing, as well as a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering from the same institution. He also holds a Diploma in Education from the University of Education, Winneba, Kumasi Campus, and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering from Tamale Technical University.
His areas of expertise include design of experiments and modelling, engineering product design, analysis and manufacturing, maintenance engineering, production engineering, and community service. Engr. Amoanab has over fifteen years of teaching experience at the pre-tertiary level in Mathematics and has taught several engineering courses including Engineering Mathematics, Strength of Materials, Instrumentation and Control, Alternative Energy Sources, Quality Control, Maintenance Engineering, and Production Engineering. He is committed to teamwork, staff and student development, and fostering innovation through creative thinking. His research interests focus on developing practical engineering solutions that contribute to industrial growth and sustainable development.

Brief Biography
Engr. Jonathan Afrifa is a Mechanical Engineer and Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bolgatanga Technical University with extensive expertise in engineering materials, mechanics of materials, nanomaterials, computer-aided design, thermo-fluids, and energy systems. He holds an MPhil in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), an MTech in Mechanical Engineering, and a BSc (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at UMaT.
His research interests focus on advanced engineering materials, particularly the microstructure and micro-segregation of nanomaterials, phase transformation, and grain structure recrystallization. Engr. Afrifa has taught several courses across mechanical and related engineering disciplines and has contributed to engineering education through curriculum development for various accredited programmes. He has published research articles in peer-reviewed journals, serves as a reviewer for Elsevier, and is an active member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET-Ghana), a licensed professional engineering body under the Engineering Council of Ghana.

Engr. Francis Dery is a Mechanical Engineering academic and researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he has been a faculty member since August 2021. He holds an MPhil in Mechanical Engineering, an MTech in Mechanical Engineering Technology Education, and a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering Technology Education from the University of Education, Winneba Kumasi Campus (UEW-K). He also holds a Higher National Diploma in Agricultural Engineering from Wa Polytechnic and a Diploma in Education from UEW-K.
Engr. Dery has expertise in engineering production, sustainable solar design, manufacturing engineering, engineering technology education, and soil and water engineering. He is actively involved in academic and professional activities, collaborative research, manuscript review, and student project supervision. He has contributed to departmental development through effective academic administration and teaches various engineering courses while supervising Higher National Diploma projects focused on addressing practical engineering challenges.

Brief Biography
Engr. Kwame Dubik is a renowned academic and Mechanical Engineer with over twenty years of teaching experience in welding and fabrication. He holds an MPhil in Mechanical Engineering from Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), an MTech and a BSc in Mechanical Technology Education from the University of Education, Winneba, and an Advanced Certificate in Welding and Fabrication Technology from Tamale Technical University.
His areas of expertise include welding measurement and fabrication, material selection and procurement, welding of various steel types, steel fabrication, and welding inspection and testing. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised numerous Higher National Diploma student research projects and contributed to engineering research through publications in international journals. He has also played leading roles in engineering innovation projects, including the design and installation of shea butter processing machines and the development of agricultural machinery such as a mini tractor and a groundnut harvester.

Francis Azum Abunkudugu is a seasoned Automotive Engineer with extensive experience in automotive engineering, education, and applied research. He holds an MPhil in Automotive Engineering Technology from Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), a BSc in Automotive Technology Education from the University of Education, Winneba, and a Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Automobile Option) from Kumasi Technical University.
His areas of expertise include internal combustion engines, vehicle technology, automotive electrical systems, and hydraulic systems. Beyond his engineering practice, Mr. Abunkudugu dedicated six years to teaching Automotive Engineering at the pre-tertiary level, where he contributed to the training and mentorship of future engineers. Jonah Adombila Adongo is an experienced Automobile Engineering educator and researcher with a strong academic background in automotive engineering technology and education. He holds an MPhil in Automotive Engineering Technology, a BSc in Automotive Engineering Technology Education, and a Diploma in Education from the University of Education, Winneba–Kumasi (now Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, AAMUSTED). His professional qualifications also include Motor Vehicle Technicians Parts I–III from Kumasi Polytechnic (now Kumasi Technical University) and Motor Vehicle Mechanics certification from Bolgatanga Technical Institute.
Mr. Adongo has built an impressive teaching career spanning primary, technical, and tertiary education. He taught for nine years at Sherigu Primary School, nine years at Bolgatanga Technical Institute, and later served as a part-time Assistant Lecturer at Bolgatanga Technical University before his current appointment. He teaches Higher National Diploma and Degree courses in Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, combining technology-enhanced instruction, multimedia resources, and practical demonstrations to create engaging learning experiences. His research interests include mobility safety and security, automated vehicles, and sustainable transportation technologies. Beyond academia, he is an inspirational community leader who serves as the elected Assembly Member for the Basengo/Nyokokor Electoral Area in the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly of the Upper East Region of Ghana.

Mr. Wandaogo is a versatile Mechanical Engineering lecturer and multidisciplinary researcher with expertise spanning computational science, renewable energy technologies, propulsion systems, automobile engineering, aerospace engineering, and bioengineering. He holds a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering Physics and Entomology and Wildlife from the University of Cape Coast. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Computational Mathematics at C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Science, Navrongo, Ghana.
His research interests focus on the application of advanced mathematical modelling, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and computational methods to solve complex engineering challenges in aerospace science, renewable energy systems, propulsion technologies, and engineering design. With a strong passion for robotics, rocket propulsion technology, and sustainable innovation, he integrates interdisciplinary knowledge into teaching and research to inspire students and develop solutions for emerging global technological challenges.

Mr. Awongo Seidu Dauda is a Mechanical Engineering design and manufacturing expert with strong academic and professional experience in the development, optimization, and analysis of mechanical systems. He holds an MPhil and MSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, and a BSc. in Mechanical Technology from the University of Education, Winneba Kumasi Campus.
His research and professional interests focus on the design and manufacturing of mechanical systems, particularly in welding, casting, and machining processes. He specializes in modelling, factorial design for experimental planning, Design of Experiments (DOE), process optimization, and defect identification and inspection in welding and casting applications. Mr. Dauda is also passionate about teaching and research in manufacturing processes, fabrication and welding technology, stress analysis, machine design, computer control of machines and processes, engineering research methods, and heat and mass transfer.
